Über delicious Bircher Müesli recipe
Idea
I have to start with announcing that Bircher Müesli is über delicious! Oh, and it’s healthy too! Two birds, one stone. Bircher Müesli was invented around 1900 by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Brenner for his patients. He was born in Aarau which is about one hour driving from my apartment. He promoted eating at least 50% row food on a daily basis / 100% raw food for people with poor health. He was a pioneer in Europe thinking that food can be used to keep the body healthy rather than just satisfying hunger.
He was promoting early bedtime, physical training and garden work to his patients. Also each meal began with a small dish of Müesli. Patients had to skip alcohol, coffee, chocolate and tobacco while they were treated by him. He suggested sun bathing, cold showers and a harmony between people and nature.
Recipe
- 500g joghurt
- 150g Birchermüesli or any oats Müesli
- 2 apples
- 1 lemon
- 150g fresh fruits
- 50g nuts (walnut, hazelnut etc.)
- 50g raisins or other dried fruits
- Honey (optional)
Prepare in the evening
Mix the joghurt with the Birchermüesli (oats with or without dried fruits). I use swiss Birchermüesli which doesn’t contain any added sugars. Add the juice of a lemon and mix. Leave the mixture overnight in the fridge. Some people don’t like the texture of the oats if it’s soaked all night, so you might want to prepare 30-60 minutes before eating. You might add some milk or apple juice if you’d like to. Experiment with different versions.
Prepare in the morning
Add the grated apple to the Müesli, add raisins, add the somewhat broken nuts and mix. Top with the fresh fruits / whole nuts. Ooze some honey if you wish. And for the last step, the good thing is that you can always use the seasonal fruits. I’ve already used: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, banana, plum, peach, apricot. I’ve add at least 2-3 different types for a richer taste and better looks.
Cheers!
